It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come with Subway Surfers. In 2012, this game was all the rage for both low-end and high-end smartphones, and it even transcended age, too! Little kids loved it for all its color, and for adults, it was well-timed fun dodging trains as Jake like it were yesterday. Fast forward to 2025, and this classic endless runner is very much alive; maybe even more than ever.

Subway Surfers has hit its teenage years and it’s celebrating in style with fresh events, new characters, and creative twists that keep both old fans and new players coming back for “one more run.” In this article, we’ll look at what’s new with Subway Surfers in 2025, from its huge 13th anniversary world tour to cool crossovers and community-driven content. Let’s jump in.

Still Running Strong After 13 Years

Subway Surfers first launched in 2012, and here we are 13 years later with the world’s most-downloaded mobile game – over 4 billion installs to date. If that stat doesn’t blow your mind, consider that 150 million people still play it every month. Not bad for a game that many of us played in high school, right?

The secret sauce to its longevity is constant updates. Developer SYBO Games (now part of Miniclip) hasn’t been shy about keeping the game “fresh” with new content every single month. The core gameplay hasn’t changed – you’re still dashing down subway tracks, grabbing coins and power-ups – but the wrapping around that gameplay keeps evolving. New cities, new characters, fun seasonal events, and even entirely new game modes have been added over the years. The result is that Subway Surfers in 2025 feels both nostalgic and surprisingly new at the same time.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the easy, pick-up-and-play fun. That’s part of why it’s still topping charts. SYBO also famously spends very little on ads; Subway Surfers grew mostly by word of mouth. After all these years, it’s basically a household name in mobile gaming.

A World Tour for the 13th Anniversary (200 Cities and Counting)

The biggest news in 2025 for Subway Surfers has to be its 13th anniversary celebration. In May 2025, the game officially turned thirteen and kicked off a “World Tour” event that hit an incredible 200th city destination. That’s right; Subway Surfers has featured two hundred different city themes in its lifetime, from New York to Tokyo, Paris to Mumbai. For the big anniversary, SYBO brought the World Tour full circle back to where it all began: Copenhagen, Denmark. Copenhagen was the game’s original setting in 2012 (SYBO is a Danish studio), so this was a heartfelt homecoming for longtime fans.

The anniversary World Tour also introduced a new event format where players unlocked a new city each day by collecting special “suitcase” tokens. Essentially, during the event (May 12 to June 1), you’d start in Copenhagen and then each day a different city environment opened up once you gathered enough suitcase tokens. The lineup spanned 21 other cities beyond Copenhagen, including iconic locations like Paris, London, Tokyo, and Rio. Talk about a birthday bash!

Of course, it wouldn’t be an update without new characters and gear. The 13th anniversary event added two new surfers, “Loc” and “Stevie,” who fit the travel theme (complete with stylish globetrotter outfits). Longtime fans know that Subway Surfers has a massive roster of characters, but Loc and Stevie brought some fresh personality in 2025. There were also new hoverboards and outfits to collect during the event, all keeping with the travel/celebration vibe. And for a little extra birthday cake icing, SYBO dropped a special “13th Birthday” hoverboard as a nod to the occasion.

New Characters, Modes, and More Content Surprises

The anniversary event set the tone, but 2025 has plenty of other new content drops that show Subway Surfers is not stuck in the past. If you’ve been away from the game for a while, you’ll be amazed at some of the new modes and features that have popped up recently.

For example, did you know Subway Surfers now has an Augmented Reality (AR) component? In late 2023, SYBO introduced “Subway Studio,” an in-game AR feature that lets you put your favorite characters into real-world scenes via your camera. It’s like a mini movie-maker – you can pose characters like Jake or Tricky in your backyard or on your desk and create photos or videos with them. The idea is to tap into the huge Subway Surfers community on TikTok (the hashtag has over 34 billion views on TikTok!) by giving players easy tools to make their own content. Ever wanted to take a selfie with Yutani or Frank in your kitchen? Now you can. It’s a fun example of how the game is keeping up with the times and blending with social media trends.

Then there are new game modes that spice up the familiar runner gameplay. A great example is the “Floor is Lava” mode that launched as a limited-time event in early 2024. This mode literally covered the Subway Surfers city in molten lava and challenged players to parkour without touching the ground. It was a childhood dream come true (who hasn’t played floor is lava as a kid?).

The mode had its own rewards, too; if you proved your skills, you could unlock a new character, the Red Panda, by surviving the lava run.

Beyond modes, new characters and boards drop regularly as well. The World Tour updates constantly add city-themed characters (we saw “White Rabbit” and “Peter” added in the July 2025 update, for example) and fun hoverboards like the manta ray-themed “Jamanta” board which was a reward during the Earth Day event.

Keeping track of all the characters is almost a game in itself at this point; there are hundreds! SYBO even runs community contests where players design new characters; the winners get their creations added into the game. A fan-designed surfer named “Hammy-Bee” (yes, a bee-inspired design) was one such addition. The Craft-A-Character competition has become a staple for Subway Surfers anniversaries, and it’s yielded some awesome fan-made characters, giving players a sense of ownership in the game’s content. It’s really cool to see the community’s creativity directly influence what we see when we play.

Collaborations: Subway Surfers Meets Crossy Road (and More)

2025 has also proven that Subway Surfers isn’t playing solo; it’s doing some surprising crossover events. The most notable team-up this year has to be Subway Surfers x Crossy Road. In a crossover nobody saw coming, SYBO and Hipster Whale (makers of Crossy Road) joined forces for a double-game event starting March 31, 2025.

Each game borrowed elements from the other. In Subway Surfers, players got a special Crossy Road Challenge mode where the goal was to run as far as possible before time ran out, much like the timed runs in Crossy Road. By participating, you could unlock hilarious crossover characters: “Chicken Jake” and “Mallard Tricky,” which essentially put Subway Surfers characters in goofy chicken and duck costumes reminiscent of Crossy Road. Imagine Jake wearing a giant chicken outfit; it was as funny as it sounds, and it brought a fresh look to the endless runner we know so well.

Meanwhile, Crossy Road players saw their world infused with Subway Surfers flavor. They got to hop around a Subway Surfers-themed level as the iconic character Jake, complete with trains and subway tokens to collect.

The event ran for about three weeks and generated a lot of buzz because, let’s face it, these are two of the most popular mobile games ever. Seeing them collide was a treat for mobile gamers. It also highlighted how big Subway Surfers’ reach is; after dominating mobile downloads, it’s now partnering with other hit games to create unique experiences. The crossover was well-received, with many fans hoping SYBO does more events like this. What’s next, Subway Surfers x Temple Run? Subway Surfers in Fortnite?

Collaborations haven’t been limited to other games. Celebrity partnerships have also made their way into Subway Surfers in recent months. Late in 2023, the game introduced a playable character based on Latin music star J Balvin as part of a climate change awareness campaign.

And in December 2024, pop star Demi Lovato appeared in Subway Surfers through a broader environmental initiative called Green Game Jam (via PlanetPlay). In these events, players could purchase the celeb avatars and know that 100% of the proceeds went to environmental causes (like clean cookstove projects in Kenya, in J Balvin’s case).

Community and Cause: Pride Month and Green Initiatives

Subway Surfers in 2025 is also doubling down on community-driven content and positive causes. One of such events was the Pride Month 2025 event in June. SYBO has made it a tradition to celebrate Pride, and this year they introduced a brand-new character named Berta during a special World Tour stop in Barcelona. What’s special about Berta is that she was designed by a fan – a winner of SYBO’s Craft-A-Character contest – and she represents LGBTQ+ pride in both her story and flamboyant “Summer Eleganza” outfit.

Beyond Berta, the Pride update also gave everyone a free Pride-themed profile frame to show off their support. The developers also partnered with Allies in Arts, an organization supporting marginalized creators in the arts, and donated a portion of Pride in-game purchase proceeds to that cause.

In fact, SYBO has a history of doing this: previous years saw partnerships with groups like the It Gets Better Project and Copenhagen Pride, as well as a campaign with Skate Like a Girl to support LGBTQIA+ youth.

Environmental awareness is another big theme. Subway Surfers has been part of the United Nations’ Playing for the Planet Alliance, meaning they incorporate eco-friendly messages into the game. In late 2024, we saw the Veggie Hunt event encouraging players to learn about plant-based diets and sustainability. This quirky event (set in the Sydney update) had players collect veggies during runs to build a virtual veggie sandwich which then unlocked a new character called “Billy Bean,” a fun veggie-themed surfer.

In April 2025, for Earth Day, Subway Surfers ran the “One Run Challenge” where the goal was to score as high as possible in a single run to unlock the special Jamanta hoverboard. This was part of a broader Earth Day campaign with other games, showing that SYBO is serious about the planet. All these events demonstrate that Subway Surfers has evolved into more than just a game about kids outrunning a grumpy inspector. It’s now a platform where causes can be highlighted in a fun, interactive way, and where players worldwide can feel part of something positive while they play.

The Endless Run Continues

All told, 2025 has been anything but boring for Subway Surfers. The game managed to balance nostalgia and innovation, celebrating its roots with events like the classic World Tour recap, while embracing new ideas through crossovers and cause-driven content.

Subway Surfers showed that even after 13 years, it can still evolve with the times: partnering with other popular franchises, supporting community causes like Pride and Earth Day, and expanding its world tour to keep things fresh. The casual, colorful gameplay that made it a mobile staple remains at the heart of the experience, but these updates added depth and kept the Subway Surfers name trending.

As we head beyond 2025, Subway Surfers is riding a wave of momentum. The year’s highlights have ensured the game stays competitive and culturally relevant for its massive player community. If 2025 taught us anything, it’s that Subway Surfers has no intention of slowing down on the tracks.
