PUBG Mobile has unveiled the 2025 Africa Cup, marking the game’s first official tournament exclusively for Sub-Saharan Africa. This inaugural competition gives African squads a direct route to the PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC); a milestone in a region that previously had no formal qualifier to the world stage.

How to Register

Registration opened June 26 via the PUBG Mobile app and runs until July 9. Teams across the continent will battle through online qualifiers and a group stage, with the top 16 earning an all-expenses-paid trip to Nairobi, Kenya for the Grand Finals in September. Notably, the tournament is backed by smartphone brand Infinix and offers a $8,000 prize pool (≈ Sh1.4 million) with cash rewards even down to 16th place.

Competitors will “drop in” to prove themselves on home soil. The winner not only claims regional bragging rights and $2,000 cash, but more importantly secures Africa’s first-ever PMGC Finals slot, earning the chance to face the world’s best PUBG Mobile teams later this year.

“If you think you’re the best, then it’s time to test yourself and show the rest of the continent the stuff you’re made of,” challenged PUBG Mobile’s Sub-Saharan Publishing Head Brian, expressing excitement to see players from all over Africa “drop into the zone” and fight side by side with their squads.

Until now, African rosters only reached global PUBG events via wildcards or through other regions, but Tencent’s 2025 competitive roadmap finally grants a dedicated continental berth. This move aligns with similar expansions in South Asia and LATAM and reflects publishers’ recognition of Africa’s fast-growing mobile gaming audience.

The Main Stage

The Grand Finals in Nairobi will be a landmark live event for African esports. Travel and accommodation are covered for all qualifying teams, underscoring PUBG Mobile’s investment in the region’s talent. Industry observers predict knock-on effects: improved local servers and infrastructure (reducing lag and attracting sponsors), grassroots growth through campus esports and gaming cafés, and better talent retention as players see they can compete professionally without relocating.

Telecoms and device brands also gain a showcase to promote 5G smartphones to gamers. In short, Africa is no longer a “peripheral zone” but an emerging talent pipeline in PUBG esports.

Local significance

African gamers finally have a recognized PUBG Mobile platform of their own, rather than piggybacking on other regions. The Africa Cup plants a firm flag for the continent on the global esports map, proving that African teams can earn their way to world finals. It also validates the growing esports infrastructure across Africa – from better connectivity to corporate sponsorships – that has been years in the making.

This is very much in line with Carry1st’s mission to elevate Africa’s gaming community onto the global stage. By investing in African tournaments, PUBG Mobile is letting local players “drop hot” and rise up internationally, inspiring a new generation of talent and showing global organizers that Africa is an essential market, not an afterthought.
