Genshin Impact throws a lot of different resources at you, and it can be confusing how to spend or save them. Let’s break down the key ones and how to manage them:
Hero’s Wit, Mora, and Materials – Avoiding Common Pitfalls
Hero’s Wit and Adventurer’s Experience are EXP books for leveling charac
ters. Early on you get a chunk from quests and adventure rank rewards, but they burn fast. Don’t use high-value EXP books on low-level characters you’re not committing to. For example, avoid using a Hero’s Wit (worth 20k XP) to push Amber from lvl 10 to 15 “just because.”
Save those for pushing your main characters up through higher levels where the XP required is large. Use the smaller Adventurer’s Experience (5k XP) and Wanderer’s Advice (1k XP) on minor level bumps or less-used characters if needed. It’s about prioritization. Mora is the in-game currency for almost everything; leveling, ascending, artifacts, weapon upgrades, etc. New players often underestimate how quickly Mora disappears. Upgrading a weapon to max or leveling a 5★ artifact to +20 costs hundreds of thousands of Mora each. You will get a lot through quests and chests early, but you can spend it just as fast.
Be frugal with Mora in early game; don’t level every weapon you get, or roll artifacts excessively (each +4, +8 roll costs Mora). A common advice is to focus Mora on things that directly progress you: character level-ups and ascensions are top priority (you need those to raise base stats and world level gates). Weapon upgrades for your main DPS weapon is next. Maybe some essential talent upgrades at AR30+.
But hold off on, say, crowning talents (that’s an endgame move), or upgrading artifacts to max pre-AR45. Also, be aware of materials: there are local specialties (like Philanemo Mushrooms for Barbara, Valberries for Lisa, etc.) and enemy drops (slime condensate, hilichurl masks) needed for ascensions and talent levels. Don’t sell or discard these materials – you’ll need them! When killing mobs, pick up all drops. When exploring, pick every shiny plant you see. It’s wise to take note of what each of your main characters will need for ascension and ensure you farm a bit of that on the side.
For instance, if you know you’ll want to ascend Xiangling, start collecting Jueyun Chilis in Liyue early; if you main Noelle, gather Valberries in Mondstadt. A big mistake is ignoring these until you hit the level cap – then you scramble to find them. Use the Adventurer’s Handbook Boss tab to see what bosses drop the ascension gem you need and plan resin usage accordingly. Which brings us to the giant of resource management: Resin.
Resin Usage Guide – What to Farm and What to Save:
Original Resin is essentially your energy system (max 160, refills 1 per 8 minutes). Efficient use of resin is crucial for long-term progress, as it’s the gateway to the most valuable materials. As a beginner, you might feel you have “too many things to spend resin on” – character ascension bosses, weapon ascension material domains, talent book domains, artifact domains, ley lines for Mora or EXP, etc.
Here’s the priority order I’d suggest in the early game (AR1- AR40):
1) Character Ascension Bosses: These cost 40 resin each and drop the elemental gems and boss materials needed to ascend characters at level 20/40/50/ etc. Early on, focus resin here to ascend your main team. Ascending characters not only raises their level cap, it gives a big one-time stat boost and often unlocks a passive talent (like Kaeya’s passive that restores stamina on kill, etc.), plus improves their talents’ max level. It’s a huge power spike, so do not delay ascensions due to resin stinginess.
If you need 2 Hurricane Seeds from the Anemo Hypostasis to ascend the Traveler, spend that 80 resin – it’s worth it.
Pro tip: When world level is low, you get fewer drops per boss, but it’s okay; you might have to fight a boss a few times over a couple days to get enough. Use the crafting bench to convert gem fragments to higher tiers if needed or to change gem types (there’s a conversion using Dust of Azoth later). But anyway, boss farming is top priority to get your ascensions done.
2) Talent Books (Domains): As you reach AR26+, talent level-up books become available in domains (Tue/Fri for certain ones, etc.). However, below AR45 those domains drop mixed lower rarity books and can be stingy. I’d suggest not going too hard on talent domains until you have at least ascended your characters a couple times. That said, leveling talents from 1 to 2 or 2 to 4 can make a noticeable difference. Maybe allocate some resin weekly to talent books for your main DPS’s main talent. But keep in mind you also need boss drop materials for talents at higher levels (which you won’t have until later), so there’s a cap. Early game, talent leveling is secondary to getting characters and weapons leveled up.
3) Weapon Ascension Domains: These domains (open certain days for weapon mats like Chains, Mask, Arrowheads, etc.) are important once you have a weapon you know you’ll stick with. If you’re using a 4★ weapon on your main DPS, it’s worth farming the materials to ascend that weapon at least to rank 3 or 4 (level 60 or 70 cap). Weapon ascension yields big base ATK increases. Just be efficient: if you have multiple weapons needing the same domain, wait and run it on the specific day in co-op maybe to save time. But typically, pick one weapon to ascend at a time (likely your main’s weapon).
4) Ley Line Outcrops (Mora or EXP): These are the blue (EXP) and gold (Mora) blossoms on the map, costing 20 resin each. Early on, you get a lot of EXP books and Mora from exploration and quests, so you might not need to touch these much. However, if you find yourself short on character XP or Mora to ascend, running a few ley lines is fine. They become more resin-efficient at higher world levels (bigger outputs), so try not to rely on them too heavily at low AR. But they are there as a fallback – for instance, AR25-ish you might ascend several characters and run out of Mora; doing a couple gold ley lines can refill your coffers. There was a Reddit tip: “Try to keep your Mora above a certain threshold by doing ley lines if needed,” because running completely dry of Mora means you can’t level anything. True – balance it out.
5) Artifact Domains: As mentioned, not recommended until later. Pre-AR45, artifact domain drops cap at 4★. At AR40 you can get a chance of 5★ but not guaranteed. If you really want some better artifacts early, it might be worth doing a few runs at AR35-40 to replace your 3★ stuff with 4★ sets (like Berserker, Instructor, The Exile etc. can drop from world, but Noblesse, Gladiator, etc. come from domains/bosses). Still, I’d caution against heavy resin investment here. You get a full set of 4★ artifacts for free at AR25 Adventure Rank reward (the Adventurer set, which is not bad). Also world bosses (the same ones you kill for character ascension) drop artifacts, including 5★ at higher levels. So you’ll accumulate some without dedicated farming. Thus, artifact domains are the lowest priority for resin early on.
6) Weekly Bosses: At AR27+ you unlock the first weekly boss (Andrius the wolf), and then later Stormterror Dvalin. These cost 30 resin (reduced from 60 for first 3 claims per week as of some patch). They drop unique materials for talent ascensions of 5★ characters and high-level talents – not relevant for you until much later, but they also drop good artifacts and weapon prototypes sometimes. It’s worth doing them each week if you can (co-op if needed). They’re essentially bonus loot. As a beginner, don’t stress if you can’t beat them immediately, but as soon as you have a handle, incorporate them each week for long-term benefit.
Also, note you have Fragile Resin items; these are precious! They restore 60 resin each. You get them from Adventure Rank rewards and events. Save Fragile Resin for later (AR45+ or for big events) unless you absolutely need a boost now. Many new players waste them early because “my resin is capped and I don’t want to waste regen” – it’s actually fine to let resin sit at cap occasionally if you’re busy; it’s better than blowing Fragile Resin and then regretting it later when you want to farm endgame artifacts or something. Fragiles become extremely valuable in late game when one domain run can yield a powerful artifact. Early on, one fragile for a couple extra hero wits is not worth it. So hoard them – consider them part of your long-term bank.
- Primogems and Currency – Spending Strategies: Now for currencies like Primogems, Genesis Crystals, Stardust, etc. Primogems are your free gems for wishing. The golden rule: Don’t waste Primogems on things other than wishes or resin refreshes. Beginner mistake: using primos to refill resin frequently or to buy Mora/EXP from the shop – those are bad value. Early on, you shouldn’t need to refresh resin with primos except maybe occasionally if you’re just shy of an ascension material and can’t wait. Even then, weigh it: 50 primos for 60 resin is something you might do sparingly (like maybe you do one refresh on a weekend to farm a bunch), but try not to make it a habit. Instead, save primos for Intertwined Fates (the pink wishes for event banners). We advise new players to be strategic: ideally, stockpile primogems until you have enough to guarantee a 5★ you really want (which is 180 wishes for hard pity, though 90 for 50/50). But at minimum, try to save up 10 pulls at a time for banners of interest.
Also, use the free Acquaint Fates you get on the standard banner, but don’t spend primos on standard banner beyond that – it’s better used on limited characters—another currency: Stardust (from pulling 3★ items in wishes). Stardust can be exchanged in Paimon’s Bargains for more Fates each month (5 of each type). Always buy those 5 Intertwined Fates with Stardust – it’s basically turning the trash blue pulls into more chances at good pulls. That is top value. You’ll accumulate Stardust as you wish; spend it monthly. Starglitter (from pulling duplicate 4★/5★) is rarer; you can get characters or 5★ weapons from that shop. As a new player, you might use some Starglitter to get a 4★ character you really like if they pop up (the shop rotates). For example, if Xingqiu or Bennett appear in the Starglitter shop and you have the 34 Starglitter, they are 100% worth considering. Bennett in particular is one of the best supports in the game – getting him early can turbocharge your team. But if none of the offered characters excite you, you could save Starglitter for later (or spend a bit on the Fates if you’re feeling lucky).
For those considering spending money: The Blessing of the Welkin Moon is widely regarded as the best low-cost purchase – for around $5 it gives 300 Genesis Crystals upfront and 90 primos per day for 30 days (total 2700 primos) which is a great steady income. If you’re comfortable spending and committed to the game, Welkin is highly recommended (just remember to log in daily to get the primos). The Battle Pass (GNostic Hymn upgrade) is another value buy if you play a lot, as it gives a ton of resources and a 4★ weapon at BP level 30. But as a beginner, you might not reach BP 30 easily on first go, so maybe hold off until you know you can complete it. Genesis Crystals (direct currency) are essentially primogems but can also be used to buy cosmetic outfits. If you decide to top up, make sure you use a trusted source like the Carry1st Shop for local payment methods.
One more tip on Primogem usage: Many new players ask, “Should I pull on the weapon banner?” The answer is generally no for beginners – the weapon banner is for when you have a solid roster and are chasing specific 5★ weapons. As a beginner, characters will impact your gameplay far more than a 5★ weapon would. So put Primos into character banners (or standard with free fates only). There’s an exception if you somehow got a roster of characters you love and want a particular weapon that’s on rate-up, but that’s advanced and still risky due to gacha. So yeah, concentrate on building a fun team of characters first.
Common New Player Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Let’s highlight some frequent mistakes newbies make (some we’ve touched on) and how to steer clear:
- Mistake: Spreading resources too thin. This includes leveling every new character you get, upgrading lots of weapons partially, or trying to max multiple characters at once. The result is you end up with AR30 with 8 characters all around level 40, but none strong enough to carry. Avoid this by focusing resources on 1-2 main damage dealers and a couple of supports as discussed. It’s fine to bench some characters until later. You can always level the others later when resources are more abundant. Think depth, not breadth, in the early game.
This also applies to raising World Level; don’t push world level (by AR ascension quests) if you feel your core team isn’t ready. It’s okay to pause and grind a bit (for ascensions, better gear) before increasing world difficulty. Over-leveling your world while your characters are under-leveled is a recipe for feeling weak.
- Mistake: Farming high-level artifacts too early. We hammered this point home, but to reiterate: many new players waste resin on artifact domains chasing 5★ artifacts at AR30-40. The drop rates are low and the stats are random; you’ll likely replace whatever you get. Focus on ascensions and talents first; artifacts can come later when you can get the best ones. As CBR’s list of new player mistakes notes, “Artifact farming before AR45” is inefficient. Instead, use that resin to improve your talents or collect more mora/exp to strengthen your characters. You will have plenty of time at the endgame to resin-farm artifacts (trust me, that grind never ends, so no need to rush into it!).
- Mistake: Using Fragile Resin prematurely or neglecting to hold events for resource gathering. Some new players either hoard Fragile Resin forever or use it all immediately. The optimal use is mid-late game when resin is most valuable (like farming artifact domains at AR45 or a special event domain with great rewards).
Using a bunch at AR20 on leylines is a bit of a waste. On the flip side, don’t forget you have them – if you reach AR45 and are grinding for that artifact set and you’ve got 20 Fragiles, you could convert some to expedite progress. Another oversight is ignoring limited-time events. Events often give talent books, mora, exp, even characters or weapons, for free. As a beginner, you might feel “that’s for endgame” but often events have portions accessible to newer players or can motivate you to progress faster to join. For example, some events have a lowered difficulty mode or give rewards like Hero’s Wit just for participating. Always check the Events menu – those rewards can ease a lot of resource pain (don’t miss out on, say, a free Xiangling or Fischl from an event).
- Mistake: Not doing Daily Commissions or forgetting freebie systems. Daily commissions are quick and give primos – missing them is missing out on ~1800 primos a month, which is significant. Try to do them consistently; they take maybe 10 minutes. Also, use the freebie systems: log into HoYoLAB (there’s a daily check-in web event for a few extra resources each month), claim your rewards from reputation (each region has a reputation system unlocking gadgets and mora at higher levels – start those quests when you can), use the Serenitea Pot (when you unlock it at AR35) for passive ore and exp generation. These little things add up. Many beginners also miss that they can get a free 4★ glider skin by reaching AR rewards at certain levels (Mondstadt glider at AR??, etc.), or forget to claim mail rewards (Anniversary mails, etc.). Basically, keep an eye on those red notification dots in menus – they usually mean free stuff.
By being mindful of these pitfalls, you’ll streamline your journey and avoid the frustration of having wasted resources. Remember, every experienced player has made at least one of these mistakes. Learn from others and you’ll be ahead of the curve.
